Best Beach Destinations in Africa: Islands, Coasts & Hidden Gems

Africa's beaches range from world-famous Indian Ocean islands to undiscovered Atlantic stretches. These are the best — ranked for different kinds of beach travellers.

Africa Has Some of the World's Best Beaches

Most travellers don't think of Africa first when planning a beach holiday. That's a mistake — and it means the beaches are often less crowded than equivalents in Thailand or the Caribbean.

The continent's Indian Ocean coastline stretches from the Red Sea to South Africa, passing the Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Zanzibar. The Atlantic coast has the wild dunes of Namibia, the golden beaches of Senegal, and the volcanic coves of Cape Verde.

Seychelles — The World's Most Beautiful Beaches

The Seychelles is in a category of its own. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue island is the most photographed beach on Earth — a sweep of coral-pink granite boulders, blinding white sand, and shallow turquoise water in a natural lagoon. Anse Lazio on Praslin is a close rival.

The 115-island archipelago sits 1,600 km east of mainland Africa, outside the cyclone belt. Water temperature hovers at 27–28°C year-round. Marine life is spectacular — whale sharks pass through seasonally, and sea turtles nest on the beaches.

Best time: April–May and October–November (between trade winds).

Zanzibar, Tanzania — Spice Island Perfection

Zanzibar is East Africa's classic beach add-on to a Kenya or Tanzania safari — and for good reason. Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast have powdery white sand and turquoise water that barely changes with the tides. Paje on the east coast is the kite-surfing capital of the Indian Ocean.

Stone Town, Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed old city, is a fascinating maze of carved wooden doors, Arab trading-house architecture, and Swahili street food. The combination of beach, history, and spice plantations makes Zanzibar one of Africa's most complete island experiences.

Best time: June–October and December–February (dry seasons).

Mauritius — Luxury and Lagoons

Mauritius has been synonymous with Indian Ocean luxury for decades, and the reputation is earned. The island is encircled by a coral reef that creates calm, clear lagoons on the western and northern coasts. Le Morne in the southwest, flanked by a dramatic basalt monolith, frames one of the island's finest stretches of beach.

Mauritius works for all budgets — the beach itself is free to all, and a range of accommodation from guesthouses to Six Senses ultra-luxury resorts means it doesn't have to be expensive.

Best time: May–December (outside the cyclone season).

Mozambique — Untouched Indian Ocean Coastline

Mozambique is East Africa's secret beach destination. The 2,800 km coastline is one of the Indian Ocean's longest and least developed. The Bazaruto Archipelago — five islands off the coast near Vilanculos — has some of the clearest water and most vibrant coral reefs in Africa. Dugong (sea cow) populations still survive here.

Tofo Beach in southern Mozambique is famous for whale shark and manta ray encounters so consistent that researchers have been studying the same individual animals for years.

Best time: April–November (dry season).

Cape Verde — Atlantic Island Escape

Cape Verde sits 570 km off the West African coast — close enough to reach on a 6-hour flight from Europe, far enough to feel like a genuine escape. Sal and Boa Vista are flat, sandy desert islands with excellent consistent beaches. Santa Maria on Sal is the main beach resort area.

The windier conditions that can frustrate sunbathers make Cape Verde perfect for water sports — it's one of the world's top windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations. The grittier islands like São Vicente have a vibrant music culture (Cape Verde is the home of morna, its melancholic national music form).

Best time: November–June (dry season, consistent winds).

Senegal — West Africa's Best Beaches

Senegal's Atlantic beaches don't get the Indian Ocean marketing, but they're excellent. Saly is the main resort strip south of Dakar — long beaches with calm Atlantic water. Cap Skirring in the Casamance region is perhaps the finest beach in West Africa, backed by cashew forests and visited by almost no one.

Dakar itself has several good urban beaches (Les Almadies, Yoff) reachable by taxi. The combination of beach, Dakar's creative energy, and the haunting Gorée Island makes Senegal one of Africa's most rounded beach holidays.

Best time: November–May (dry season, lower humidity).

South Africa — Wild Coasts and Surf

South Africa's beaches are different in character: powerful surf, dramatic cliff scenery, and a cooler Indian Ocean in the east and cold Atlantic in the west. Boulders Beach near Cape Town is unique worldwide — African penguins nest and waddle alongside swimmers. Camps Bay has the backdrop of the Twelve Apostles mountain range.

The Garden Route — the 300 km coastal stretch from Mossel Bay to Storms River — combines extraordinary beaches with forests, wildlife, and bungee jumping. Jeffrey's Bay is one of the world's most revered surf breaks.

Best time: November–February (summer, warmest water).
